Sense Field Review

Concert Review: May 6, 2000

by Mike Chapoton

Fortunately for me, I arrived at Emo's just in time to see Sense Field hit the stage. I was a little discouraged at first because they were playing on the smaller stage inside, it was about 90 degrees, and it wasn't packed. I had hoped for a better turnout to support these guys. No matter, Jon and the bunch (no pun intended) began to run through the set with enthusiasm and a level of emotion that I can only describe as "explosive". It almost made it better that there was a smaller crowd, because as I frequently looked around, everyone there was really into the moment and appreciating the band. They played songs from all of their albums, but my favorite moment was when Jon announced, "this is a song from our record Building, it's called Building." Feeling the power of that song live is truly amazing. The Smiths cover "What Difference Does it Make" was awesome as well, with Chris busting out the 12 string Richenbacker for the full Johnny Marr effect. The show raged on for over an hour, and afterward I got to talk to everyone. They were super cool as usual. Can't wait for then to come back to Austin, hopefully with a new home for their unreleased album.
