i just saw sensefield at maxwell's in hoboken, and believe me it was one
of the best shows i've been to. before this i only knew them through comps,
only knowing the songs "outlive the man" and "shady day." a show like this
one'll make you want to buy all of their cd's, and be a devout follower. i
was attracted to this show because their singer blows me away. he's got such
an awesome voice. anyway, the show began with a humble, sincere introduction
from mr. jonathan bunch, and that dialogue continued the whole night. they
opened with "outlive the man"(which i recognized), and just blew the roof
off. this manic pace and emotional intensity was a constant. they played some
new material which they promised would be out soon, as well as the older
ones. there was great interaction with the crowd initiated by the band. every
song had deep hooks that i immediately got into, and started singing from
first listen. ones that stand out include "open heart surgery" and
"building." they did play "shady day" which i sung to loudly since i knew
every word. there were also slower numbers that were just as powerful such as
"war with the world" and "different times." then an unexpected surprise came.
jonathan announced they weren't about the 70's but the 80's. they then
proceeded to play the smiths' "what difference does it make?" which i know
word for word. after this heart rendering rendition mr. bunch stated how much
these shows mean to him, and how each and every one of the fans is important.
after a touching statement like this they closed with "soft" which featured
vocals by the guitarist. the thanks you's were said, and they left the stage.
the crowd applause was enough for one more. they closed the night with
"shallow grave," and proved why they are such an important band in the
emo/hardcore scene.
